多药耐药基因组岛是指细菌染色体上一段具有典型特征的基因簇,携带有多种耐药基因,决定细菌的多药耐药性;多药耐药基因组岛具有移动元件的特征,如G+C百分比和密码子使用与宿主菌不同,常含移动基因,可以在同种甚至于不同种菌株间水平转移,加速了临床上多药耐药菌株的产生。目前已发现在沙门菌属和其他菌属的细菌中携带沙门菌多重耐药基因岛。由于沙门菌多重耐药基因岛1上的耐药基因具有可移动性,使其在细菌多重耐药获得与传播机制的研究中具有重要意义。
