Objective To compare the effects of self-ligating brackets and traditional metal brackets on periodontal clinical indexes. Methods From January 2012 to January 2014, 100 patients with orthodontic brackets and self-ligating brackets in orthopedics department of Shaoxing People’s Hospital were selected and randomly divided into the traditional group and the self-locking group 50 cases. The traditional group of patients with traditional brackets orthodontic treatment, self-locking group of patients with self-locking brackets, respectively, before and after treatment 1, 3, 6 months on the two groups of patients with periodontal indicators to check the items include the gingival index (GI), plaque index (PLI), gingival bleeding index (SBI) and so on. Results There were no significant differences in the periodontal indexes such as GI, PLI and SBI between the traditional group and the self-locking group before treatment (all P> 0.05). There was no significant difference in average GI between the traditional group and the self-locking group (t = 0.936,1.174,1.714, respectively, P> 0.05). The average PLI of the traditional group was 1.54 ± 0.66 and 1.81 respectively ± 0.71 and 1.83 ± 0.74 respectively. The average PLI of the self - locking group were 1.12 ± 0.48, 1.28 ± 0.50 and 1.31 ± 0.51, respectively. The traditional group was higher than the self - locking group (t = 3.639, 4.316 and 4.091, respectively, P <0.05) There was no significant difference in mean SBI between the traditional group and the self-locking group (t = 0.732, 0.465, 0.434, P> 0.05). Conclusion Self-ligating brackets are good for the maintenance of periodontal index in patients, protecting the periodontal tissues and deserving clinical promotion.
