Who knew an alien invasion could be so fun？ In DreamWorks’ new animated movie Home， a group of colorful aliens decide to take over planet Earth， where “simple humans” live. The movie is based on the book， The True Meaning of Smekday， by Adam Rex.
Home director Tim Johnson told Times For Kids that he read the book to his sons and decided it would be the perfect story to animate. In the book and movie， a lovable misfit alien named Oh lands on Earth and ends up running away from his own people—the Boov. Oh forms an unlikely friendship with a girl named Tip， who is on a quest of her own across the world. “It is an alien invasion movie， but it is told from the aliens’ point of view，” Johnson says. “I think it is a really fun way to think about what it means to be a human being.”
Home makes its friendly theater invasion on March 27.
TIME FOR KIDS：
How are the book and movie different？
TIM JOHNSON：
We kept the story idea， but the book takes place in the U.S. and in the movie the characters use a flying car to travel all over the world.
TFK：
How did you come up with the idea for the Boov to drive bubbles？
JOHNSON：
I wanted the Boov’s technology—their cars and toys—to be unlike anything we have seen before. The Boov are so gentle and cute that we thought bubbles would be a perfect way to have them control gravity.
TFK：
The Boov change colors based on their mood. How did you decide on that？
JOHNSON：
Early on we were trying different colors， but we liked all of them. We thought it would be exciting to have the Boov change colors. They are like living mood rings.
TFK：
What is one of your favorite scenes？
JOHNSON：
We created a knock-knock scene in which Tip teaches Oh a joke. We thought it was so fun that Oh is a little unknowing， and impatient about this silly joke. It is one of my favorite scenes because sometimes we make a judgment about another person and we decide if they are good or bad. Or， we make a judgment about a piece of music or a joke. But if we just let ourselves really listen， we might find out that that joke is really funny or that person might be our best friend one day.
TFK：
What can kids expect from this movie？
JOHNSON：
I hope they do what I do； that is fall in love with Tip and Oh. I want Oh to be my best friend！I want an alien to come to Earth and I want to teach him comedy and teach him how to dance. I hope all kids feel the same way.
