During the Iraq war in 2003, the U.S. commander found that when the ground forces advanced rapidly, the communications system was unable to meet the command demand during the movement. The troops had to stop and lift up the antenna for liaison. Not only was this a waste of time, it also interrupted the situational awareness of the battlefield and was easily attacked by the enemy. This experience of U.S. rates stimulated the development of “Satcom-on-the-Move” (SOTM). Another driving force for rapid growth is the increasing prevalence of digital networks in ground operations and the increasing pace of command and control that require tactical command departments to continually update operational information through high-volume data communications .
