中国政府提出的建立和谐、富裕社会的发展目标,以及在新世纪实现农业现代化的目标,为农业工程的发展提供了难得的机会和新的挑战。该文作者以农业工程下属的7个子方向即农业机械化工程、农业生物与环境工程、农村能源与环境保护工程、农产品加工工程、农业信息工程、农业水土保持工程和土地利用工程分别阐述各自的发展历程,存在的主要问题以及今后重点发展的方向。从宏观上为农业工程今后的发展绘制了一幅蓝图。论文作者认为,随着农业工程各个方面的健康、快速发展,它将在中国建立和谐、富裕社会,以及中国农业的可持续发展中发挥越来越重大的作用。
