Oryx Energy evaluated the design and operation of the low tension surfactant / polymer test in the Meccleskey sandstone formation in Ranger Field, Eastland County, Texas. The test was conducted in an area of 40 acres of flooded area. The area was selected for suitability for surfactant / polymer treatment due to its good reservoir permeability, adequate supply of fresh water, and high residual oil saturation (ROS’S). The main deficiencies in this area are the lack of well block confinement limitations and differences in salinity due to fresh water injection. The purpose of this test is to determine the applicability of the technology and its implementation process. Based on monitoring results and possible scenarios, the pilot was successful, but did not meet design goals due to reservoir formation heterogeneity and reduced displacement efficiency. The successful propagation of chemical front and oil recovery within the test area showed that surfactant injection significantly increased the tertiary recovery over large areas in this area and similar reservoirs. This paper explores the design, operation and evaluation of the pilot project at the mine and also envisages the successful implementation of the technology.
