Polynuclear neutrophils (PMNs) play a central role in early host invasion-invading infections, and the PMN-mediated inflammatory response is stopped by its apoptotic process. Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) is a persistent and over-infrequent inflammatory condition with high rates of complications and mortality. It is known that the prolongation of PMN survival in burn patients is due to the delayed expression of apoptosis, and clinical studies have been conducted to understand whether the same phenomenon occurs in SIRS. Sixteen SIRS patients were selected from the ICU, seven were scheduled for elective aortic aneurysm resection (AAA for stress-free control) and eight healthy volunteers (for normal control)
