  I haven’t read many books written by Chen Shige. He has just got a few short stories in children’s literature or juvenile literature issued. Therefore, he is not that kind of writer who has issued books one by one. He sends the book of Almost Everything has a King to me, published recently by Children Press. Also he attaches a very long essay Why I Write Fairy Tales. I know what he means and also his points of view on fairy tales and children. Shige is a man of thinking, and a poet. The fairy tale written by him is just the reflection of his own spirit and his aesthetic method of care for children.
  Almost Everything has a King is a book of short fairy tales. When I start to read, I have a feeling that the fairy tale of Shige is one without any educational and rational logic. He writes stories, narrates plots, and creates images and let the fantasy fly, all of which are from the psychical rhythm and the authentic feelings. He is not the writer who considers readers accurately and just writes for certain groups of age. According to educational logic and some ideas, he uses words rationally to master the rhythm. All of his fairy tales seems not to be worked out before hand. The stories are going on naturally. The plot develops smoothly. However, the language and context are very spiritual, enriched with romantic flavor.
  Almost everything has a King is the first article of the short fairy tales. So the title of book is just that. It is a little longer fairy tale under Shige’s pen. The conception is delicate and very interesting. It narrates an alien that lands on earth and wants to know whether it is interesting or not. If not, he will attack the earth. When the kings on the earth hear the news, they are all nervous. They hold several meetings for various kinds of different purposes. They are also in session of United Nations General Assembly, discussing great plans together. Furtherly, kings from ten thousand countries arrive in the mountain resort in the Himalayas one after another. The elephant king hosts the meeting. The dog king, wolf king, eagle king, tree king and dinosaur king all express their viewpoints and want to fight. They have reached an unanimous agreement on deployment of water army and air force. However, they can not make a decision on deployment of the land force .They even raise doubts of whether the turtle belongs to land force or water army. When they are debating with a lot of people involved, the rose king stands up and says with exceeding fascinating and charming expression: “Do not argue any more. We can use honey-trap.” Finishing her words, she starts to dance trippingly. The king of grass country brings the band to play music immediately. Getting confused of beautiful music and dance, all the kings forget the war, stop arguing and start to enjoy a grand banquet. Finally, the phoenix king flies to the center of banquet. After showing his graceful dance, he reveals his original appearance. It turns out that he is the alien. He announces: “There is no war any more. It is a mistake. I welcome you to visit 60IB planet.” As regards this fairy tale, the conception of story is ingenious. Of course, what is the most favorable is its inner logic of fairy tale. It is not written according to any model. The writer gets the enlightenment from nature and then applies some metaphor about some phenomenon in reality life into the fairy tale. Therefore, in the fantastic world, exists the shadow of reality and fairy tale can also be found in real life. I like the title of this fairy tale as well. It does not reveal the image of fairy tale and include any narrative. However, after reading, you will feel that is a perfect combination, a good name that can refine and summarize the connotation of the fairy tale.   River’s Daughter is another excellent work by Shige, written in first person. The narrator is the river’s daughter. She is the youngest daughter of river king, a mermaid, who likes sitting down under bridge, singing and appreciating beautiful scenery. In night of moonlight, she always sees a poet, living in a house on the river side, who also goes to bed very late in deep night. Once in a night, a kind-hearted, laborious and poor old fisherman throws out the fishing net, which unexpectedly catches the youngest daughter of river. Later this news becomes known to the poet. He invites this old fisherman to drink. When he gets drunk falls asleep, he let the little prince of riverclan who loves the daughter of river secretly, take her away. When the old fisherman wakes up, he cannot find the river’s daughter. The poet points at book of Andersen's Fairy Tales in her daughter’s hands, and tells the old fisherman that they have discussed The Little Mermaid for a whole night. Finally, the river’s daughter and the prince of riverclan got married. In the night when they marry each other, they emerge on the surface of water and go to see their respected poet. They find that the poet and his beautiful wife are narrating the story of “River’s Daughter” to their niece in love. The conception of this fairy tale is ingenious, too. It is also embedded with the plot and theme of classical fairy tale The Little Mermaid. However, Shige does not copy mechanically. He just makes the images in the classical fairy tale as factors of his own fairy tale and gives new explanation. He also adds new connation into it, which makes the fairy tale much more fresh and charming. It should say that this is a kind of “intertexual” writing, can be regarded as a new trial and exploration in writing of fairy tales. In the past, fairy tales by Tang Sulan also absorbed some factors in the classical fairy tales and also tired to present the expression of “intertexual”.
  The Bear’s Dream is also a poetic and aesthetic fairy tale. In winter snow falls. The bear goes into hibernation, while making a very beautiful dream. Shige narrates it using the method of dream narration, which reads very light and misty and gives readers a feeling of spirituality and warm. Most of Shige’s fairy tales are short, such as The Story of Door, Days and Crying Girl. Though there are only three or five hundred words in a story, most of them have the subjective role which the author experienced. The personal pronoun like “we” appears in some fairy tales repeatedly. This is also a very strange feeling for reading. If we find some fault, it may be much better to avoid using “we”. In the fantastic world of fairy tale, it is much better to let it be independent. Reader just stand out of the fantastic world and open the book of fairy tale with curiosity. They just follow the words. That kind of feeling may possibly be more wonderful. After finishing reading all the fairy tales of Shige, especially the one Why I Write Fairy Tales, I acknowledge this kind of writing style of Shige. He says: “I am a believer. I write the fairy tale for the reason that I have heard the summon of God. ” “The story seeks for splendidness in itself. However, the fairy tale is just for the wonderfulness of other people. “These words of Shige just show that he has really understood the fairy tales and poetics. People writing fairy tales as stories are always the second-class, even the third-class ones or humble ones. People who write the fairy tales as fairy tales and write it just as what Shige said, “with a kind of great pureness”. are the real fairy tale writers.
  Shige walks through the door of poetry into fairy tale and starts to ponder the world of children. He measures his writing style as a philosopher, which can be regarded as transcendence, a self transcendence and new understanding of children’s literature. I can not praise Shige’s fairy tale excessively. It is only to say that the poetry is the eternal soul of fairy tales forever! The awe to the world of children’s heart is the root of writer of children’s literature.
