It is well known that drugs that block voltage-dependent Na + channels include local anesthetics, antiarrhythmic drugs, and anticonvulsants. Recent studies have shown that these compounds also provide an effective cytoprotective mechanism in animal models of cerebral ischemia, hypoxia and head trauma. Wood Review: Evidence for Neuroprotective Effects of Na + Channel Blockers and New Arguments for the Role of Molecular Pathways in Voltage-Dependent Na + Channel Blockers. Several drugs are currently undergoing clinical studies of stroke and head trauma. The authors discuss the therapeutic potential of these drugs.
