五子衍宗丸简称五子丸。现在一般认为起源于明代王肯堂《证治准绳》女科卷四。但百年老店胡庆余堂清末的产品说明书则认为五子丸的制方年代是在宋代:“五子衍宗丸,此乃宋·朱丹溪所制方也。重用枸杞、菟丝以补肾,用复盆以滋精,用五味以生血,则肾水补,阴气元阳,可永保矣。又加车前者,使小便开而精益固,则肾气自足。取义衍宗,正蕃育子嗣之意也。每以淡盐汤送服三钱。”不过史料表明,这还不是五子丸的最早处方,它的起源
