Globalization and technological change not only increase productivity but also aggravate global competition. These improvements have subsequently led to an increase in organizational legitimacy, individual responsibility, and more flexible and varied labor market conditions. These changes have also led to higher and higher demands on labor work and self-management. Although individualization leads to the expansion of an individual’s social space, it also increases the number of complex decision-making, considerations and areas of responsibility. In particular, this change is evident in the responsibility of individual employability. Self-management and self-realization become very necessary. Based on interviews with a number of young Swedish people who have left a clear track record, this article discusses the implications of these changes. The article argues that the individual responsibility and the need for self-actualization have different consequences for different groups in society. Therefore, there are strong reasons for resolutely challenging the notion that class, as an analytical tool in modern society, has been depleted. Interviews show that in order to understand the consequences of individualization in professional life, the class needs to be examined.
