During the construction of the high-head hydraulic complex, drainage should be carried out downstream. Therefore, the reservoir operation will have different water levels and pass multiple drainage. If there is an earth dam project in the water control project, flood discharge tunnels should be set for each drainage layer to drain the reservoir of water below the normal water level reserved by the reservoir and to also release the water from the previous stage. The outflow of multi-layered drainage tunnels can be centralized into a single tunnel (eg, the Cherchi Isis Hydropower Complex), or separate drains on each floor (Figure 1).
