To successfully carry out its mission in a changing operational environment, modern armed forces must adopt a combination of tactical, technical and standard operational procedures. Traditionally, camouflage was used to protect soldiers from being seen by the naked eye, with the emphasis on reducing visible form, shine, shadow, silhouette and texture. However, with advances in detection technology, the detection range has been further extended from the visible spectrum to the invisible spectrum, such as the shortwave infrared (SWIR) detector that is readily visible on the commercial market. As these technologies become cheaper and more accessible, their spread to non-State armed forces, insurgent groups and potential rivals will also worsen. Today’s soldiers hope to avoid the detection of SWIR and thermal imaging detectors without the need to wear more layers of specialized clothing or fabrics.
