闵凡利的小说有着非常广泛的民间因素。这一因素首先体现在他把关注的视点集中在与中国民间生活有着密切联系的佛教文化思想上,或凸显极度痛苦之人“顿悟”后内心的纯净与欢乐,或张扬英雄救世的悲悯情怀。其次体现在他总是以社会边缘人的身份,表现那些与主流社会、大众文化有着明显差异的文化传统和民俗风格,讲述平常的底层百姓的故事,以自身对世界的领悟和体验对其生存状况加以美学意义上的编码,并在此基础上探索和追问人类生存的意义,真诚地呈现自己对人生的理解、对世界的看法。在人物描写上,他运用的是中国传统人物画勾勒线条的粗犷写法,较少肖像与心理的精刻细描,具有简洁、奇崛的民间艺术风格。
