In the opinion of French scholar Rene Killard, desire does not point linearly to the object, but rather imitates the desire of the other. Based on this, Killard constructs a desire analysis model centered on the concepts of “imitation” and “mediator”. By analyzing the human nature and social reality of the novelists, it connects the study of literature and social history and politics, The “desire for imitation” is extended to observe all levels of human life. In his view, “Mediators of Desire” presents the inevitable situation that the desire of individuals under the free and equal promises since the Enlightenment clashed; upholding the illusion of spontaneous and autonomous desires has created a romantic attitude falsely false in many aspects of modern society; The desires of imitation exacerbated the ethical dilemmas of modernity.
