黄尊三于1905年赴日留学,1912年毕业回国。黄尊三在日本时的日记记载颇详,藉此可获知他留日期间的学习与生活情况,洞悉其思想嬗变轨迹。起初,他以学业为重,很少参加政治活动,属于较“保守”的留日学生;在经历了一系列的事件之后,其态度才逐渐发生转变,由刻意关注国家大事,再到对清政府由痛心至失望,主张暴力革命。辛亥革命后黄尊三的思想又往前迈进一步,他认为革命并不能解决一切问题,根本在于彻底改造中国人的素质。透过黄尊三的留学日记,可以了解清末政局变动下留日学生的不同反应,从而大体窥见百余年前留日学界的真实状貌。
