日本在华领事官是近代中日关系史上值得注意的一个群体。19、20世纪之交的中日关系处在一个很特殊的时期,当时驻上海代理总领事小田切万寿之助的表现十分活跃,在沪任内为扩张日本在华利权不遗余力,与中国各阶层人士均有密切交往。义和团事变发生后,上海领事官一跃为对华交涉的重心,小田切在东南互保、战时交涉、战后和议等问题上发挥了重要影响,又因个人禀赋、才能及政治抱负,在其外交实践中表现出某些值得注意的“个性”。考订小田切在庚子前后的事迹,通过观照其人,可透视当时日本对华外交的底蕴,并深入了解日本外交官与清朝人士交往的一般形态。
Japanese consular officers in China are noteworthy groups in the history of modern Sino-Japanese relations.
