查理士达夫序言:除了航海日记之外,哥伦布给桑迭戈的一封信,也可算是发现史上极其重要的文件了。这封信或许是哥伦布第一次航行回国后立即送交的。(见查理士达夫著《哥伦布的真实事迹及美洲的发现》中的英译。)这是我们可以肯定为出自那个热那亚人笔下的少量文献之一。鉴于桑迭戈资助了第一次探险,不足为奇,他应该收到一封信:一份他乐于其事的圆满报告。信中具的日期是1493年3月4日,刚好是哥伦布回到里斯本的前一天。由于这封信很重要,现全文记录如下:
Charles L. Duff Preface: In addition to the diary of the sea, a letter from Columbus to San Diego can be considered an extremely important document in history. This letter may be sent immediately after Columbus returns on his first voyage. (See Charlizeff’s translation of “The Real Story of Columbus and Discoveries in the Americas.”) Here is one of the few documents we can be sure of from the Genoese. Not surprisingly given that Sandia funded the first expedition, he should have received a letter: a successful report of his delight. The date of the letter was March 4, 1493, exactly the day before Columbus returned to Lisbon. Since this letter is very important, the full text of the record is as follows:
