The European Space Agency has taken the first important step by approving an investment of 11.1 million U.S. dollars for a two-year pre-research on its remote sensing satellite program. This pre-research program is part of a larger ESA development project of the European Space Agency. Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom have signed this initial development plan. Two earth observation satellites are expected to be launched in the mid-eighties. Other countries are expected to participate in major plans for the future. However, non-member countries of ESA, Canada, may also consider participating in the entire program. The first two remote sensing satellites will be equipped with radar and visible and infrared remote sensors to monitor land-use management, help identify the assistance needed by developing countries and monitor 200 nautical miles
