Dustin Lance Black: It means that this message, that’s so important to me, that message gets to go wider. It means more people hear about it.
Black spent three years researching Harvey Milk and interviewing those closest to him.
(Voiceover from Milk)
Milk: What do think of my new theater?
Jones: Bit over the top.
Reporter: How do you feel the film captured you?
Cleve Jones: That is me; that is what I look like; that’s how I spoke; that’s how I move.
Anne Kronenberg: Not only did he get the dialogue right but they caught the whole feeling of the time of what it was like in the 70s.
(Voiceover from Milk)
Kronenberg: Hi, guys.
Cleve Jones and Anne Kronenberg helped to get Harvey Milk elected and defeat anti-gay
5)legislation. They hope the film will inspire today’s activists.
Kronenberg: Harvey understood, back in the 70s, that you had you put a face on lesbian and gay men.
Jones: Tell our parents, tell our families, and then walk door to door in our own neighbourhoods and knock on those doors and say, “I’m a gay man. Please don’t vote for this. It will hurt me”.
Black says this fan letter sums up his hope for the film.
Black: So this one is titled, (reading the letter) “From a Gay Mormon. Just a few weeks ago I wanted to commit suicide because I hated myself, but the film made me realize that I need to honour Harvey Milk’s memory by accepting myself and fighting for the civil rights that are due to us.”
