A study of traveltime of remote earthquakes revealed the existence of an ancient thermophoric column in the deep Earth’s upper Earth beneath the South American-Brazilian continent. Although plates have moved thousands of kilometers, the geolocation of these columns remains static relative to the continents that cover them. This shows that the coupling of the upper mantle and lithosphere beneath South America since the division of the Gondwana has provided a possible answer to the long-term driving force of the continental plate.
