作为小说或总体叙事文学的一个重要方面,人物塑造一直是文学理论研究的热点。西方文学理论将其笼统概括为“直接人物塑造”与“间接人物塑造”或者“扁平人物”与“圆形人物”的分别,虽广为理论界接受,却并不能很好地涵盖并解释东西方文学的各类人物塑造方式。中国古典小说的人物塑造具有不同于西方小说的特性。对其进行归纳和探讨既能弥补西方文论二元式划分的不足,又有助于中西方读者更好地理解和欣赏中国小说。
