Daniel A. Bell, Hahm Chaibong, Eds: Confucianism and the Modern World, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2003. Criticizing numerous books by one author is a difficult undertaking: the result is not overly selective. In the first case, the book reviews become an enlarged catalog; in the second case, it is inevitable to be blamed for a deliberate omission. Having weighed their respective dangers, I decided to take a selective approach below - though my choice of focus is on something, not just intentional (as I will try to show). However, in order to maintain a balance, let me point out the broader content contained in the book as a whole. This book is primarily intended to examine (and confirm) the universal applicability of “Confucianism” - or more precisely complex Confucian traditions - to the contemporary world. three
