Women’s wear in the mid-19th century in the United Kingdom emphasizes women’s slender waistline and broad skirts to reinforce women’s secondary sexual identity. Costumes are not only the external medium through which women express their own bodies, but also an important carrier for shaping femininity and beauty. The women’s wear in this period, through its symbolism, sets out the different traits and status of the two sexes.
