The emission of light from materials has been a subject of interest since the earliest of times. The association of luminescence, and in particular thermoluminescence (TL),with exposure of a material to the radiations emitted by radioactive salts, was observed by the pioneering research in radioactivity. Both fluorite and calcium fluoride containing manganese were used to detect ionizing radiations.By the 1940s a reasonably clear understanding of the general processes involved in thermoluminescence in crystalline media had been developed as reported by Ginther and Kirk.[1] The borate dosimeters appear to have attractive TL properties compared with the other hosts.[2-6]The borate compounds are stable, easily doped, highly sensitive and close effective atomic number.
