Plasmodium falciparum has at least two genes, pfmdr1 and pfmdr2, associated with the mammalian multidrug resistance gene (mdr) encoding the P-glycoprotein. The product of pfmdr1 was named P-glycoprotein homolog 1 (PGHI), which was highly consistent with the amino acid sequence of human and mouse mdr gene products.
