荐语这是一部奠基于19世纪理性主义精神的历史著作。作者丰富的证据资料,很容易使人们忽略其背后鲜明的历史观。基督教主宰的中世纪不但被视为一个黑暗的时代,甚至是对之前野蛮时代的强化,而且历史在这里也陷入了一种循环——迷信与暴力。反之,作者也高估了启蒙运动的理性精神。如果再多活几年,经历了一战的残酷与破坏,作者是否会加入斯宾格勒关于“西方没落”的论调呢?最起码,他可能会赞同汤
