中国关于下一代网络的研究包括国 家自然科学基金委员会的NSFCNET、 教育部的CERNET-IPv6试验床、中国 下一代互联网交换中心DRAGONTAP、 信息产业部6TNET下一代IP电信网实 验室、国家计委的“下一代互联网中日 IPv6合作项目”、国家发展与改革委员 会等8部委“中国下一代互联网示范工 程项目(CNGI)”等。 2003年启动的中国下一代互联网 示范工程(CNGI项目)是国家级的战 略项目,该项目由信息产业部、科技 部、国家发展和改革委员会、教育部、 国务院信息化工作办公室、中国科学 院、中国工程院和国家自然科学基金 委员会八个部委联合发起并经国务院 批准启动,该项目的主要目的是搭建 下一代互联网的试验平台,IPv6是其 中要采用的一项重要技术。以此项目 的启动为标志,我国的IPv6进入了实 质性发展阶段。
