Transport authorities have taken contingency measures to ensure the smooth movement of people during the world`s largest annual migration that started on Saturday, but train tickets are still hard to get because of the gap between supply and demand.
A record 3.4 billion trips are expected to be made during this year`s Lunar New Year travel rush, which lasts for 40 days from Jan 26 to March 6, as Chinese return home for family reunions during the Spring Festival holiday.
Transport authorities across China should improve contingency plans targeting bad weather such as extreme low temperature, fog and heavy snow, Feng Zhenglin, viceminister of transport, said ahead of the peak travel season.
Chinese have traditionally favored road and train transportation, especially trains, for their safety and lower prices.
With a large number of people traveling during the period, getting a ticket, especially a train ticket, has been difficult every year. People often have to wait in long queues in railway stations, even over night.
To help migrant workers get train tickets, railway authorities have encouraged them to buy tickets in groups (normally with 10 or more people) so they can get tickets before the official date when tickets begin to be released, the Ministry of Railways said. “In the past I usually bought train tickets at the railway station or its official agents, but now I always buy at home on my computer,” said Wang Ying, a whitecollar worker from East Chinas Anhui Province, who works in Beijing.
“It saves me a lot of time. But still I found it very difficult to get a ticket before the Spring Festival, and all the tickets to my hometown seemed to be gone in a flash after they started selling online.”
Despite the convenience of online buying, many migrant workers, who often lack basic computer skills, found it hard to get a ticket online.
“It has always been very difficult to buy train tickets in recent years, not only for migrant workers, but also for all other groups such as whitecollar workers,” said Liu Xiao, a researcher in Beijing`s Anbound Consultancy.

Lets Bake (烤) sugar Cookies
Nobody is actually sure who created the very first cookie. But the first cookie may have been a mistake. Many cooking experts believe that a long time ago cooks who wanted to test the temperature of their ovens would bake a little bit to find out if the oven was hot enough to bake an entire cake. These test cakes were called keokje, which means “little cake” in the language used in the Netherlands. People from the Netherlands brought the recipe to the United States. The word “cookie” may have come from their word keokje.
Cookies are also very popular in England, but the English call them “biscuits”, as do Australians. Almost every country has a word for cookie. In Spain, they are called galletas, and in Italy, cookies are called biscotti. Americans are not the only people who enjoy cookies. You can make cookies following these steps:
◆ Preheat oven to 150℃. Put a little butter on a cookie sheet.
◆ Mix together white sugar, brown sugar, butter and eggs. Then add vanilla.
◆ Add flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder. Then mix well.
◆ Drop by spoonfuls onto the cookie sheet.
◆ Bake at 150℃ for 12 minutes or until lightly brown.
40. In which country were the test cakes first made?
A. Spain.
B. Australia.
C. The Netherlands.
D. The United States.
41. What does the first paragraph talk about?
A. Describe how to bake a cake.
B. Tell why people like cookies.
C. Tell when people make cookies.
D. Describe the history of cookies.
42. What is the first step to bake cookies?
A. Heat the oven to 150℃.
B. Mix the butter and the sugar.

AMERICANCHINESE performer Wang Leehom has certainly made waves with his pop music and his film career, but as his recent concert confirms, the 34yearold is more than just another star with an attractive voice. He has been active in raising peoples awareness of environmental protection.
Wang held a pop concert in Beijing this month to spread ecofriendly ideas. The concert was a standingroom only affair—the seating was made of recycled cardboard benches. The tickets were not only biodegradable (可分解的), but green—completely. Made from recycled paper, each ticket also contains seeds embedded (植入) in the paper. If it is watered and placed in sunshine, grass will grow from it.
The concert is only one of his recent efforts to promote environmental protection through music. His 2007 album, Change Me, with the theme of saving the environment, is still a hit. Besides being sold in packaging made from recycled paper, each CD comes with notes including 10 ways to be more environmentally friendly. The special edition of the album was also packaged with limitededition chopsticks—a green alternative to disposable wooden chopsticks.
In practice, Wang also lives an environmentallyfriendly daily life. He carries chopsticks with him for his meals. All the light bulbs in his home have been changed to energy saving ones. He also keeps the airconditioning at too low a temperature—the lowest he sets the temperature is 27 degrees. Since he released his first album 15 years ago, Wang has attended countless festivals and ceremonies, but seldom buys new clothes. Over 90 percent of his outfits (装束) were either borrowed or rented. As a public figure, he also shares these practices with his fans and called on them to get involved. There are many stars today that take up causes. Some will take up the cause of the worlds poor, others of the environment. Many will say that we should remember that the stars often have something to sell. However, surely no one could disagree with words Wang spoke to the audience near the end of the concert: “To create a better future for our planet, we must continue to spread the word and to encourage others.”
44. At the age of thirtyfour, Wang Leehom is regarded as .
A. not a famous singer but an actor
B. neither an environmentalist nor a CD producer
C. a good example of protecting environment as well as a wellknown singer
D. not only an advertiser but also a musician
45. is the purpose of his holding a concert in Beijing in 2010.
A. Improving environment through his songs
B. Making himself known through music
C. Having more people know his albums
D. Owning more fans in both China and America
46. After tickets are placed into water and then put in the sun, .
A. they wont sell well
B. they are no long a hit
C. grass will grow from them because of having seeds in the paper
D. they become wet and wont be sold out
47. What does the underlined word “disposable” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Can be used only once or for a short time.
B. Made to be thrown away after using twice.
C. Can be used forever.
D. Made to be thrown away after being used three times.

What Would You Want Most on a Desert Island?
This months survey shows people worldwide have a natural understanding of what they would need most if left alone on a desert island: Another person. And one they know well. Respondents (调查对象) in all 16 countries surveyed said their spouse (配偶) or partner would be their first choice to have with them. Perhaps this makes sense: An MP3 player cant help you find drinking water, your dog cant help you start a fire and who knows if George Clooney or Penelope Cruz has taken courses in wilderness survival training? Lets just hope the SOS sign you two build gets spotted sooner rather than later!
“My husband, of course! George Clooney wouldnt think Im as pretty as my husband does!”
Roseane, 42, Brazil
“My MP3 player. I would not want my loved ones, including my pet, to be left alone like this.” CoCo, 28, China
“My partner should be there to listen to me complain about the fact that we are left alone on an island—probably due to some error he made.”
Julia, 25, Jordan

Paper is different from other waste produce because it comes from a sustainable resource: trees. Unlike the minerals and oil used to make plastics and metals, trees are replaceable. Paper is also biodegradable (可降解的), so it does not pose as much threat to the environment when it is discarded. While 45 out of every 100 tons of wood fibre used to make paper in Australia comes from waste paper, the rest comes directly from virgin fibre from forests and plantations. By world standards this is a good performance since the worldwide average is 33 percent waste paper. Governments have encouraged waste paper collection and sorting schemes and at the same time, the paper industry has responded by developing new recycling technologies that has paved the way for even greater utilization of used fibre. As a result, industrys use of recycled fibres is expected to increase at twice the rate of virgin fibre over the coming years.
Already, waste paper constitutes 70% of paper used for packaging and advances in the technology required to remove ink from the paper have allowed a higher recycled content in newsprint and writing paper. To achieve the benefits of recycling, the community must also contribute. We need to accept a change in the quality of paper products; for example stationary may be less white and of a rougher texture. There also needs to be support from the community for waste paper collection programs. Not only do we need to make the paper available to collectors but it also needs to be separated into different types and sorted from contaminants (污染物),string and other items. The four most common sources of paper for recycling are factories and retail stores which gather larger amounts of packaging material in which goods are delivered, also offices which have unwanted business documents and computer output, paper converters and printers and lastly households which discard newspapers and packaging material.
Once collected, the paper has to be sorted by hand by people trained to recognize various types of paper. The sorted paper then has to be repulped (再打浆) or mixed with water and broken down into its individual fibres. This mixture is called stock and may contain a wide variety of contaminating materials, particularly if it is made from mixed waste paper which has had little sorting. Various machinery is used to remove other materials from the stock. After passing through the repulping process, the fibres from printed waste paper are grey in color because the printing ink has soaked into individual fibres. This recycled material can only be used in products where the grey color does not matter, such as cardboard boxes but if the grey color is not acceptable, the fibres must be deinked. This involves adding chemicals, waterhardening agents, frothing agents and bleaching agents. Before the recycled fibres can be made into paper they must be refined or treated in such a way that they bond together.

Dear editor,
Im writing to tell you about the discussion we recently had about whether we should know our parents income.
We do have different opinions on this matter. Most of us (about 70%) think we should know our parents income since it will help us understand how hard our parents have to work, no matter how much they earn. Then we will study harder and will not waste time and money any more. We may also learn to share our parents trouble. Well try to help them do some housework and respect them because respect is a good tradition of our country.
About 30% of my classmates think it unnecessary to let the children know how much their parents earn. If they know their parents have enough money to support the family, they will depend on their parents and dont study hard since they neednt worry about the future. It is said that especially when their parents have a higher income, the children will easily form a wasteful habit which does harm to their mind and health. (157words)

五、书面表达
(157words)
