As a painter born in the 70s, Pan Jian represented the aesthetics and values of this generation of Chinese painting. Although Pan Jian’s painting is rather obscure with the title “Defamiliarization Image,” it succinctly summarizes the representations and connotations of his landscape paintings. “Defamiliarized image ” can be interpreted as how the image is unfamiliar, that is, the relationship between image and object is not objectively reproduced, but subjectively expressed and analyzed. In other words, the painter’s sense of alienation and psychic distance through clever formal language processing clearly reflects the unique method, process, performance and result of the painter.
