中国的木雕,早有一套雕刻之法,即古人所谓的“刻削之道”。如韩非子引桓赫的话说:“刻削之道,鼻莫如大,目莫如小。鼻大可小,小不可大也。目小可大,大不可小也。举事亦然。” (韩非子《说林》)桓赫说的是刻木为人的方法,韩非子则是借此来说处事为人的道理。由刻削之道演绎处事之道,是中国文化“由器入道”、“以道涵器”的特有方式,其中的哲理意蕴是由木雕来承载
