Since 1983, the import volume of Japanese textiles has grown rapidly, especially in cotton textiles. This is due to the fact that Chinese and South Korean garment manufacturers tried to open up the Japanese market after 1984-1985. Japan’s cotton textile import volume reached 1979. At 50,037 tons, although the annual added value has declined, the growth trend has continued and reached 66,216 tons by 1985. Of the countries exporting cotton textiles to Japan, China has accounted for about 60% for three consecutive years since 1983. At the same time, South Korea’s share has increased, from 17.7% in 1983 to 23.1% in 1985. It has taken away some business from Taiwan and Hong Kong.
