A population-based observational study published in the journal Diabetologia shows a small but significant increase in the prevalence of diabetes in postmenopausal breast cancer survivors, and the incidence of diabetes in breast cancer survivors varies over time . The potential relationship between cancer and diabetes is increasingly recognized. For example, women with diabetes have a 20% higher risk of developing breast cancer after menopause than non-diabetic individuals and a 50% increase in mortality after breast cancer diagnosis. The relationship between this may be related to the role of insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia, both of which are known to be common risk factors for type 2 diabetes and cancer. In our study, the prevalence of diabetes in 24,976 newly diagnosed breast cancer women and 124,880 age-matched but non-breast cancer women was compared. Patients in the case and control groups were all from Ontario based population-based databases. During follow-up, breast cancer women
