Currently, many research groups both at home and abroad are devoted to developing new and effective drug and gene transfer systems for improving the pharmacological effects of various therapeutic factors and reducing their toxicity. Among the new nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are gradually attracting attention. Two key advantages of functionalized CNTs are their strong cell-penetrating ability and low cytotoxicity, making their use in the field of drug and gene transfection possible. CNTs can carry active molecules such as peptides, proteins, nucleic acids and drugs by forming stable covalent bonds or forming supramolecular conjugates based on non-covalent bonds and transporting them to specific tissues and organs to express Special biological function. In response to this research hotspot, this review summarizes recent advances in the application of CNTs in drug and gene transfer in China and abroad and explores its toxicity in order to provide reference for researchers in this field.
