The diversity of Japanese self-proclaimed words and the complication of their use are also rare in the world’s languages, with as many as 50 kinds of self-proclaimed words in the Meiji era. But its research is limited to a particular piece of work of that era, or a particular self-proclaimed word. Compared with the system of self-proclaimed words in other times, the Meiji era lags behind. Therefore, this article focuses on the relationship between the use of class and self-proclaimed words, discusses the use of male self-proclaimed words in the Meiji era. At the same time, the reasons for the change of male self-proclaimed words in the Meiji era were explained from the aspects of social stratification, the popularization of school education and the use of national textbooks.
