The British Road Transport Research Laboratory recently developed a computerized navigation system that saves energy and saves time for car drivers. According to preliminary estimates by experts, after the system is put into operation, it will save 2.4 billion pounds of energy every year. The computer system, known as “car navigation,” has three major components: a central computer, electronic devices embedded along the road, and electronic devices installed in the cab of a car. The principle of operation is as follows: The driver inputs his current position, destination and arrival destination into the car’s electronic device, which is coded by radio signal and directed to the electronic device buried on the roadside. Electronic devices contain information on road traffic conditions, climatic conditions, safety conditions and other information; central computer
