A greater amount of the retroviral coat glycoprotein gP70, known as serum gP70, is present in all mouse sera. But only those mice with a SLE-prone propensity to spontaneously produce antibodies to this serum gp70. Serum gp70 and anti-gP70 complexes (gP70IC) have been shown to be significantly associated with the pathogenesis of SLE in mice and therefore gp70IC has become an extremely important indicator of SLE in rats.
