汤显祖的“临川四梦”都在不同程度上体现了作者的悲剧意识,其中最明显的当属《南柯记》。《南柯记》主要表现了以淳于棼为代表的没落士子多种欲望和多种情感的幻灭。抒情范围的扩大,使该剧比《牡丹亭》和《紫钗记》具有更丰富的情感内涵。具体而言,《南柯记》的悲剧可以分为爱情的幻灭、朋友的背叛、美好的政治理想的破碎和居无定所的漂泊感,以及难以克服的性格弱点造成的困境。多层次的悲剧内涵,加强了《南柯记》的悲剧效果。
