This article is the keynote speech delivered by Don McCuell, Chairman of the Australian Society of the International Society of Emotions and curator of the National Museum of Australia, at the 4th IAI Asia Pacific Congress. In this article, the author briefly reviews the history of museum social education activities and briefly describes the main ways and methods for museums to carry out social education. Then he put forward a new concept of “museum social education”, that is, it is not general knowledge education, but a special kind of education that encourages people to participate in major issues of cadre society and change people’s perception of society. In addition, the author also separately analyzes and discusses the social education goals of natural history, cultural history, art, science, technology and social history museums. The authors cited some successful museum exhibits from Australia, New Zealand, India and the Soviet Union and their efforts in the field of social education in museums to give readers new insights.
