James Welch, a famous contemporary Native American writer in the United States, won a great reputation with The Winter in Blood (1974), The Death of Jim Ronnie (1979) and The Foolish Crow (1986). At present, most researches in academia focus on the other two, and the study on the death of Jim Ronnie is still rare. This article focuses on the lonely, struggling and self-destructive tragedy of the protagonist Jim on the margin of the reserve. From a series of behaviors when she faces a series of choices, it analyzes that the life attitude of self-deception and avoidance, which is lost in subjective thoughts, The heel of choice and the confusion of identity that constrain the living environment lead to the choice of Jim, and the destruction is the fruit of his unavoidable choice. Jim subsided in the quagmire of freedom of choice unable to extricate themselves, and ultimately can only die from its own consequences to perish, which has become the root of his tragedy. The conclusion of this article points out the profound Sartre existential significance of Welch’s work.
