There are about 28 million blind people in the world. Two thirds of them live in developing countries; living conditions there are poor, poverty, ignorance, and lack of medical and health services. All these are threatening people’s eyesight. Trachoma and vitamin A deficiency have been eliminated in developed countries but are still the leading cause of blindness in developing countries. Due to the lack of medical conditions, many cataracts in these areas have failed to receive the treatment they deserve and are still living a blind person. Through technical cooperation, the World Health Organization is trying to eliminate blindness in these areas. The suffering caused by blindness to individuals is obvious, but the social and economic consequences, especially in developing countries, have not yet received the attention they deserve.
