The Global Burden of Disease study, published in Lancet in 2013, shows that in developed countries, the prevalence of obesity in males is higher than in females, but in developing countries the opposite is true. In addition, in developing countries, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children has increased significantly, with boys rising from 17% in 1980 to 24% in 2013 and girls rising from 16% to 23%. There may be a close relationship between the two situations in developing countries. We often say that prevention of obesity should start with the baby and maybe we should go back to the source and start with expectant mothers.
