In the 1930s, France dispatched ships to occupy such places as the Nansha Islands and reefs in southern China. Subsequently, the French government claimed that it occupied nine small islands in the South China Sea and provoked controversy over the territories of China and France. The news spread to the Mainland and uproar in public opinion. The Chinese newspapers and magazines represented by “Shanghai Newspaper” in Shanghai took various domestic and foreign information and timely reported the incident. The Chinese government and all walks of life in the country defended the sovereignty of the South China Sea. The discussion on the building of national defense lashed out at the French move as a violation of China’s territorial sovereignty and pointed out that France’s strategic objective is to sow the sea rights in the South China Sea. The Japanese government’s protest to the law under the pretext of protecting the interests of Japanese people is a sign of the ongoing expansion of its strategic interest chain to the South Pacific. The coverage and review of the Nine Small Island Incident by the “Shen Bao Newspaper” can make up for the shortcomings recorded in the history of the People’s Republic of China and also reflect the changing times in the South China Sea from one side.
