The EU and Canada signed the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) on October 30 in Brussels, which will be the first new high-standard Mega trade agreement to be put into effect. The CETA negotiations began in 2009, with the original intention of promoting mutual trade and investment through a high standard of liberalization and thereby promoting the economic recovery after the financial crisis. In August 2014, a preliminary agreement was reached and signed to eliminate almost all tariffs from food to motor vehicles and further increase the mutual openness of markets.
