至今世界集装箱船的总箱位已达618.6万TEU,比去年增长14.5％,与去年的12.6％增长率相比,增加了近2个百分点。但是,箱位利用率却一直呈现下滑趋势,其中2000年的箱位利用率为95.6％,2001年的箱位利用率下降到92.8％,而到2002年底,预计世界集装箱船的箱位利用率将下滑到88％～91.7％,与2000年相比降低7.6个～3.9个百分点。由此可见,世界集装箱船的运力过剩现象仍然十分严重。
