Two thirds of Israel’s land is desert and Gobi. Only the western part near the Mediterranean Sea and several places near the Sea of Galilee are plains oasis, fertile soil, abundant water, suitable for farming, but this part of the land is less than 30% of the total land area. Most of the rest of the region is barren land, the most important is the scarcity of water resources. The annual rainfall in Israel is greater in the north, but only 70 mm in the south and only 20 mm in the south. The southernmost desert is perennially rain-free and the amount of evaporation is staggering. In such places, even the existence of human beings is a problem, let alone planting crops and developing animal husbandry in agriculture.
