The greenness of maize leaves varies with its developmental stage, growth conditions and genotypes, and this change can reflect the photosynthetic rate of leaves. Therefore, it is useful to use a method to monitor changes in leaf greenness during growth of different maize genetic lines under controlled and field conditions. Due to the inaccurate quantification of the estimated leaf green degree and the traditional method of indicating that the amount of leaf greenness is both destructive and time-consuming, the chlorophyll assay has a promising future with a portable chlorophyll meter (SPAD-501, Minolta Corp.).
