善意的谎言有时是美丽的。当我们为了他人的幸福和希望适度地说一些小谎话的时候，谎言即变为理解、尊重和宽容，具有神奇的力量。美国短篇小说《最后一片叶子》或许就是善意谎言的代表：当生病的老人望着凋零衰落的树叶而凄凉绝望时，充满爱心的画家用精心勾画的一片绿叶去装饰那棵干枯的生命之树，从而维持了一段即将熄灭的生命之光。然而，我们不能以“善意”为借口而随意说谎，无论出发点是什么，谎言很多时候都会造成不可收拾的残局。
