Since then, many Byzantine scholars have followed him to come to Italy as a Greek teacher at various universities. His teaching at the University of Florence led to a strong interest in learning Greek language and culture in Italy. He cultivated many excellent generals who revived the Greek classical culture in Italy and effectively promoted the development of the Italian Renaissance. However, he went to Italy not just to spread Greek culture, but more importantly his purpose was to seek Western military aid to the troubled Byzantine Empire.
