Introduction Fisc et al. (1954), Shepard (1955) and Scruton (1960), among others, first described the seabed topography and deposition of the Mississippi Delta and the upper continental shelf. The initial assessment of the underwater environment of the adjacent Mississippi Delta was carried out without the geological and geophysical data currently available as a result of offshore oil and gas studies. In the 1950s, exploration of the bays and shallow waters began to move offshore, and this activity has now reached the slopes.
